Summer in Geneva, Switzerland: Globalization, Governance, and Technology (Graduate)

  Switzerland
    Geneve [Geneva]

Term: Summer
Dates: June - July 2010

Description: As the hub of international governance, Geneva is an ideal location to study global governance, trade and development, human security, international organizations, intellectual property, and the global information economy. For students with academic and career interests in these areas, the Geneva Program is an ideal opportunity for hands-on learning. Participants will do on-site, behind-the-scenes visits with international organizations like the World Trade Organization, and also network with professors and professionals who work in the global arena.

The four-week intensive program will be hosted by the Graduate Institute of International Studies (known by its French acronym, HEI). The program will look at global governance broadly for the first two weeks, focusing on issues such as economic integration, human security, and international organizations. In the last two weeks, the program will focus on technology's role in global governance, covering issues such as intellectual property and creative industries.

Curriculum:

Students enroll in two courses, each counting for three graduate credits. Georgetown students must take both courses to receive credit for the program. The first course, CCTP-786 Globalization and Conflict Resolution, offered the first two weeks, will be coordinated by Dr. Cédric Dupont, Professor of Political Science at HEI, and will look at issues of global governance. Dr. Dupont, HEI faculty, and prominent guest lecturers will rotate students through a combination of lectures, simulations, seminars, and on-site visits to international organizations. Georgetown students will be in class with other graduate students from top European international affairs schools during the first two weeks. Dr. J.P. Singh, Associate Professor of Communication, Culture & Technology at Georgetown University, will teach a course the last two weeks titled CCTP-789 The Global Services Economy, which will focus on issues of technology, globalization, and governance. The course will be a smaller seminar and will also include guest lecturers and on-site visits to international organizations.

Upon successful completion of the program, Georgetown students receive six Georgetown graduate credits on a Georgetown transcript. Students also receive a HEI certificate. Non-Georgetown students should discuss transfer credit with a dean or academic advisor at their home university.

Highlights: HEI's proximity to the World Trade Organization (WTO), International Telecommunications Union (ITU), World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), and other United Nations (UN) agencies will allow students the unique opportunity to tour and hear speakers from these organizations. Competitive internships at the WTO will also be available for students after finishing the program.

* WTO Internship

The World Trade Organization is offering a limited number of competitive internships for students who complete the CCT Summer Study Abroad Program. These opportunities will start in July and go through the month of August. Internships are unpaid.

Internships will be in the Economic Research and Statistics Division of the WTO. Specific research projects will be identified at the end of January. If you are selected to intern at the WTO, a WTO researcher will be in touch with you via email at the end of January to indicate the project you would be working on and the work that would be expected from you. The student and WTO researcher must both agree on the terms of the work to formally approve the internship. At the end of the internship period, students will also receive an evaluation of their work from the WTO.

In order to apply for one of the WTO internships, in addition to the program application materials students must submit the following:

- An application for the Geneva program.
- A current CV.
- Your written statement should address any background you have in economics, trade policy or development, as well as if you have taken or will take Prof. Singh's CCTP-724 International Negotiations course.
- You must know the last date in August that you will be available to work.
