Description:
Georgetown's English Department and the Office of International Programs offer a Shakespeare in performance program to be held in London and Stratford-upon-Avon. The program begins with a week in London, where students will focus on Shakespeare's Globe Theatre, the replica of the open air stage where many of Shakespeare's plays were first performed. Participants will tour The Globe, attend three performances in London (at least one of which will be staged at The Globe), and take part in lectures and discussions of the plays they attend. Students will also have an opportunity to explore Shakespeare's London as a group. The class in London will meet in the morning to discuss the plays in performance and attend the three plays (depending on the schedules of the theaters) in the afternoon or evening. Friday afternoon and Saturday of the first week will be free for individual activities in London. The second week of the course will be held at Stratford-upon-Avon, the town where Shakespeare was born, and it will focus on the works of Shakespeare in production by The Royal Shakespeare Company. In Stratford, students will attend three plays at the theater of the Royal Shakespeare Company and classes on the plays at the Shakespeare Center (next to Shakespeare's birthplace). The classes in Stratford will be taught by Shakespeare scholars and members of The Royal Shakespeare Company involved in the productions. Participants will also have free time to explore Stratford and visit the Shakespeare Houses in and around Stratford. Curriculum: Upon successful completion of the program, students will earn a total of three Georgetown credits for the following course: ENGL 363-62: Shakespeare: Text and Performance.
