Undergraduate Study Abroad
Poland
Term: Academic Year, Fall, Spring
Dates: September - December, Februarry - June
Description:
We offer students the opportunity to see the rapidly-changing world of Central Europe at first hand while studying at Poland's oldest and most prestigious university. The city of Krakow is home to countless museums and churches filled with art treasures. The 11 universities keep the many libraries and bookstores bustling by day. The countless cafes and clubs keep the city lively by night. Students coming for study abroad at the Centre for European Studies become full-time students of the Jagiellonian University. We regularly receive students from partner institutions including American University, Boston College, University of Rochester, University of Illinois at Chicago, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and University of Richmond. In recent semesters students from universities including Loyola University Chicago, Northwestern University, Rutgers University, Syracuse University, University of Toronto, Centenary College New Jersey, Boston University, Kenyon College, College of William and Mary and University of Alberta have also attended the Centre for European Studies.
Highlights:
All lecture courses are designed exclusively for undergraduates. Each lecture course is 40 hours of classroom time and ends with a written exam or term paper. Each student normally must take at least three lecture courses and a language each semester. Some home institutions may require higher courseloads. Regular courses are worth 6 ECTS points (roughly 3 US semester credits). Language courses are worth 8 ECTS points (roughly 4 US credits). If a student has already taken a similar lecture course at the undergraduate level, the student may request permission to attend a graduate-level class. Polish language is recommended for all students. Instruction in French, German and Russian is available for students whose Polish is already at an advanced level. The Centre for European Studies organises trips for students to several Central & Eastern European countries. Major study trips are planned for 2008/09 to the Polish mountains; Warsaw; the Baltic States; Ukraine; and Croatia and Bosnia. Smaller study trips also visit Auschwitz and Nowa Huta. These trips combine tourism with academic study. In addition to seeing the sights (and eating the food), students meet with local educators and politicians.
