ACM Brazil Exchange
Brazil
Term: Spring
Dates: January-May
Description:
The fifth-largest country in the world, Brazil is at the heart of the culture, economics, politics, and geography of South America. Its population of Portuguese speakers makes Brazil unique within Latin America. The city of Juiz de Fora is located in the southeastern part of Brazil, in the state of Minas Gerais. Just 115 miles from Rio de Janeiro (two hours by bus) and 315 miles from São Paulo, with a population of approximately 500,000, Juiz de Fora is a university town. With a pleasant climate and an active music and arts community, it is known as one of the most livable cities in Brazil, as well as a center of industry and trade for southeast Brazil. Juiz de Fora is an ideal educational setting for students in Brazil. The ACM Brazil Exchange program is a brand-new ACM program, starting in 2009. The program has been coordinated since 2001 by Colorado College, and has now been extended into a full ACM program. For students interested in Latin America, or students who would like to learn or improve their Portuguese, the Brazil Exchange program is an excellent opportunity. Each spring semester, students will study at the Universidade Federal de Juiz de Fora (UFJF), one of Brazil's best-regarded universities. Students will have the opportunity to take classes in a variety of subject areas in the sciences, social sciences, humanities and arts, as well as intensive Portuguese language. For each U.S. student participating in the Brazil Exchange program, a Brazilian student will then spend the following fall semester at their campus, creating a two-way exchange. Two types of student housing are available in Juiz de Fora, giving students the option of either living with a Brazilian host family, or living in a "Republica," which is an apartment in town that is shared with other university students. Students start the program with an intensive two-week Portuguese class, followed by the start of the spring university semester, where students will take a required Portuguese class, along with 2-3 additional classes offered at the university, in a wide variety of subject areas.
