International Comparative Healthcare in Slovakia

  Slovakia
    Bratislava

Term: Summer
Dates: 5/09/09-5/19/09

Description: This program is designed for the students in the health professions schools/departments in the College of Health & Human Services (PA, OT, SW, Substance Abuse, Blindness & Low Vision, Nursing).

Comenius University Bratislava , School of Nursing and University Hospital as well as health facilities in Martin (Hospital, nursing home, mental health) will be attended. Field trips are planned to many cultural and historical locations in and around Bratislava such as Bratislava Castle and Museum; St. Martin's Cathedral - site of coronations of 11 Austria-Hungarian Kings; Modra (Village in Small Carpathian's wine making area) and observation tour of country life in Martin.

Highlights: Majority of the program will take place in Bratislava, capital of Zapadni Slovensko kraj (region) and capital of Slovakia. It lies in the extreme southwestern part of the country, along the Danube where that river has cut a gorge in the Little Carpathian Mountains near the meeting point of the frontiers of Slovakia, Austria, and Hungary. The rich mix of cultures and nations not only left its mark in the language spoken here, but also in the customs, cuisine and lifestyle. Just like the Viennese, the people of Bratislava also enjoy promenading through the streets of the city centre, taking time out for a coffee in any of the many cafes. This part of the city is referred to as the Korzo and combines elegance with charm. Visitors say that the city has a relaxed Mediterranean type atmosphere. Bratislava is a seaside city without the sea.
