Civilization and Geology, Egypt
Egypt
Term: Spring
Dates: 5/01/09-5/16/09
Description:
The course is an introduction to the geology of Egypt and the role of geology in the civilization and culture of ancient and modern Egyptians. The class will meet on campus during the spring semester for 1 lecture and 1 discussion/lab section per week. There will also be a required 2 week field trip to Egypt immediately following the spring semester. Students will earn 3 credit hours (applicable to Gen. Ed. Area IV) for the course. Graduate students will be able to receive credit (3 hours) as a 6000 level course (GEOS 6340). This program is designed to help students understand the link between science and the role it plays in forming and developing societies and civilizations. Course work during the spring semester will provide an in-depth background for students to be able to fully understand and appreciate what they are observing during the field trip portion of the course. The field trip will provide students with global insights that go beyond the simple tourist, travel experiences. Faculty led excursions, with both introductory and follow-up lectures, will be part every day's activities. Students are required to keep a field note book of their daily observations, and write a field-trip report analyzing those observations. Exposure to Egyptian geologists from South Valley University in Qena, Egypt, will help the students realize that we do not operate in intellectual isolation. Rather, good science is a world-wide pursuit contributing to all cultures alike.
