Would you like to study creative writing and British Literature at one of the Uk's top universities? If so, the Centre for New Writing at The University of Manchester offers an academically rigorous four-week summer school, which is credit bearing and has been specifically designed for international students. The Summer School is based in Manchester in the North West of England - famous literary sites (such as the Bronte Parsonage and Dove Cottage) are within easy reach. Manchester itself is renowned for its thriving culture and is home to one of the largest student populations in Europe. Students undertake two modules - Locating Literary England and Creative Writing. Students will undertake guided trips to literary locations in London, the Lake District and the Yorkshire Moors, and will take part in creative writing workshops with published writers. The 4 week program (running from 29 June -23 July) is credit-bearing (each of the two program tracks carries 10 UK credits - approx 3 US credits) and is open to undergraduates entering their junior or senior year who have a minimum GPA of 3.0 or above. The program offers academic credit and the fee includes courses, accommodation, meals and field trips associated with the course. The all-inclusive price is 2,150 GBP. The University of Manchester's Centre for New Writing opened in September 2007. It is home to a range of programmes in creative writing and contemporary literature from undergraduate to PhD level. The Centre also hosts the major public reading series Literature Live, and a new online journal The Manchester Review. Its distinguished teaching staff includes Novelists Martin Amis, M.J. Hyland, Geoff Ryman and Ian McGuire, and poets John McAuliffe and Vona Groarke.

Applications must be accompanied by: * a 400-word personal statement * a short writing sample (a poem of any length or story or essay of no more than 2000 words) * a letter of recommendation from a current teacher or instructor who is familiar with your creative written work * an academic transcript confirming your GPA score When reviewing applicants our selection criteria will be: * Academic achievement * Convincing interest in and flair for literature and/or creative writing * Commitment to exploring new ideas * The closing date for applications is 27 MARCH 2009 (including supporting documentation), but applications will be considered as they are received and places allocated on a rolling basis so you are encouraged to apply as early as possible.

Scholarships are Available. The Centre offers one scholarship of 500GBP which will be awarded to a summer school student based on the quality of their short writing sample submitted during the application process. All applicants will be automatically entered into the scholarship competition if they are accepted onto the summer school.
