This course will examine the motivations of art collectors, both historical and contemporary, and their impact on the market and on art practice. What drives them to collect? Why do corporations develop art collections? How do collections get formed and how do they de-acquisition/de-access? This course will also explore the relationships between museums, private collectors, and the evolving role of collector as dealer.
