Art, Literature and Politics in Argentina and Uruguay
Argentina
- Buenos Aires:
Buenos Aires
Uruguay
Term: Winter
Description:
This program explores the art, literature, history and politics of two of Latin America's most dynamic cities, in the middle of the Southern Hemisphere summer. Students take one or two classes in third semester Spanish, and in the culture and literature of the River Plate nations. Courses are taught in Spanish by Brooklyn College faculty to American students with intermediate or advanced proficiency in the Spanish language. Course work is complemented by visits to important art collections, including the new Museum of Latin American Art and the Fernandez Blanco Museum of Colonial Art, and to the workshop of contemporary Buenos Aires painter Luís Niveiro. The group visits the Jewish cultural center, the regional office of the United Nations High Commission for Refugees, and the Espacio para la Memoria, a museum commemorating the thousands of "disappeared" during the military regime of the 1970s. Students take a river cruise up the Tigre Delta, site of the Bioy Casares story "End of the World," and visit Montevideo, Uruguay, on a three-day excursion that focuses on the musical traditions of Uruguay, with a lecture by local musician Jorge Schellemberg and a visit to the comparsas and murgas that are rehearsing for the beginning of Carnaval. Program costs include double-occupancy housing, in/out airport transfers, local health insurance and some meals.
Highlights:
* Students select one or two courses in language, literature and culture of Argentina and Uruguay conducted by faculty of Brooklyn College. * Visits to museums and other sites of cultural interest are integrated into discussions of readings and individual projects. **Readings, discussions and assignments are in Spanish at the intermediate and advanced levels. * Buenos Aires and Montevideo offer a wide variety of parks, waterfront boardwalks, and outdoor cafés and restaurants that can be enjoyed in the warm summertime weather. * Housing in Buenos Aires is in a modern "apart-hotel" in the best part of the city, near the intersection of Santa Fe and Callao Avenues, and featuring large rooms with private bath, cable TV, air conditioning, kitchenettes, and an outdoor pool. * In Montevideo, housing is three blocks from the "Rambla" in the Pocitos section of the city, offering a great place to watch local residents go about their daily lives and a chance to enjoy the city's beaches.
