Study in one of the Largest Countries in the World! There you will visit and interact with local universities, businesses, churches, factories, villages, markets and temples. Planned trips include excursions to Beijing, the epicenter of Chinese art and culture and Hangzhou, one of China's most prosperous regions, known for its natural beauty. Above all, you'll be able to engage the people of China. This program is part of a degree certification in Chinese Studies from the Institute of Asian Studies at St. John's. If you wish, you may earn this 12- credit certificate degree simply by completing another six credits in Chinese culture during Summer Session II. Program Courses: * CHI 1110, 101: Conversational Chinese This course reviews the basic skills learned in elementary and intermediate Chinese and continues building oral proficiency with more intensive conversation within the context of Chinese culture. No prerequisite; Credit: 3 semester hours. * ASC 2610A, CHI 118A: Discovering China Introduction to Chinese culture: institutions, philosophical trends, religion, art, literature, family/marriage, science and technology. No prerequisite; Credits: 3 semester hours.

From the visual arts to the philosophical treatises of Confucius, Chinese history and culture have had a profound impact on Western art, literature and technology. Today, China continues to wield enormous influence as a rising economic and industrial power. China has enthralled visitors for more than 5,000 years. Now, through St. John's, you can spend five weeks studying Chinese language and culture at Suzhou (Soochow) University, founded in 1900. Suzhou - a vital economic and cultural center south of Beijing - will become your home.
