Medieval Mosaic: Spain & Morocco
Spain
Term: Spring
Dates: May Session 2009
Description:
When Americans think of the movements of peoples in the Middle Ages, the images that come to mind are most often those of invasion and pillage. The vast movements of populations which characterized the lengthy period labeled the Middle Ages took many forms. Not all of these movements were destructive, but all involved tensions at the borders where one group encountered another. This program will explore the ways peoples dealt with these tensions, reasons these encounters differed, the results of various cultural strategies, and lessons that can emerge for today's global migrations and diasporas.
Highlights:
*Coursework Through lectures, readings, and various excursions students will take an interdisciplinary approach to learning about medieval studies. History, literature, visual art, and music will be explored in order to develop a broad sense of how cultural contact worked in the European Middle Ages. *Excursions Several excursions will be planned both in Granada and in surrounding areas. These may include Granada's World Heritage Sites-- the famous palace and gardens of the Alhambra and the Generalife and the historic neighborhood, AlbaicĂn. There may also be an excursion to the Moroccan city of Fez where students will experience its medieval atmosphere and explore its mosques, palaces, gardens, meandering streets, and souks. *Housing & Meals Students live in shared housing with other program participants.
