Traveling Authors in Southwest France
France
Term: Spring
Dates: May Session 2009
Description:
Montpellier has long been a crossroads of cultures and people from Europe and North Africa and provides an ideal location to study traveling writers and to find the inspiration to do your own writing.
Highlights:
*Coursework Students will read and discuss works by Robert Louis Stevenson, Joseph Conrad, Tracy Chevalier, and Malika Mokeddem, all of whom traveled to Montpellier and the surrounding region to write. After reading the novel, students will have the opportunity to trace the steps of the author by traveling to the integral sites. *Excursions Excursions will take place in the heart of Montpellier and in the surrounding areas and may include the fort and former prison of Aigues-Mortes, a hiking excursion in the Cevennes--the hills around Montpellier where Robert Louis Stevenson traveled with a donkey. Finally, students may visit the ancient and still busy port of Marseilles where Joseph Conrad landed in France. *Housing & Meals Students are housed in shared housing with other program participants. A welcome dinner and farewell luncheon are included in the program fee. Additional meals can be taken in the housing or at one of the countless cafés in Montpellier. *On-Site Support The University of Minnesota's study abroad office in Montpellier will provide the on-site support for this program. Students will have access to facilities at Paul Valéry University, the liberal arts division of the University of Montpellier.
