Description:
From the base in London and Oxford, students will examine gardens and estates from medieval times through the Tudor, formal, English landscape, Victorian, Arts and Crafts, and modern movements.
Highlights:
*Coursework Through lectures, readings, excursions, and various cultural activities students learn about the history of gardens including what people in the past valued, how they lived, and how they viewed plants and nature. The course will examine English gardens from Medieval times through the Tudor, formal, English landscape, Victorian, Arts and Crafts, and modern movements. English garden style will be compared and discussed from an historical perspective and in relation to garden development in the United States. *Excursions Excursions to representative gardens and estates of each major historical period, 1400-present, will occur throughout the program. Students are likely to visit Winchester, Queen Eleanor's garden, Stourhead, Oxford Botanic Garden, Rousham, Blenhiem Palace, Stowe Landscape Garden. Hidcote, Hever Castle, Sissinghurst, Kew Gardens and the Chelsea Flower Show. *Housing & Meals Students will be placed in shared housing with other program participants. The apartments are equipped with cooking facilities, enabling students to prepare their own meals. *On-Site Support On-site support is provided by a local learning abroad center. Students may have access to a computer lab, a classroom space, and a library. On-site staff provide information to students regarding cultural activities as well as ensuring 24-hour emergency support.
