Bolivia
Term: Not Applicable
Dates: November 8 - 19, 2008
Description:
The Aymara concept of ayni is the idea of mutual responsibility, sharing and protecting resources and working for the common good. This trip will examine ayni in the larger context of education and development in Bolivia and in a specific institution that uses it as a motivating principle: The Unidad Academica Campesina-Carmen Pampa. UAC-CP is dedicated to making higher education available to young Bolivians with talent and ambition but with few economic resources. Visit the ancient Inca site of Machu Picchu (Peru) on your way home! Sponsored by Carmen Pampa Fund. This is a short-term seminar that immerses participants and challenges them to think critically about social justice issues. Each seminar is packed with face-to-face encounters with people from diverse sectors of society. As a Center for Global Education travel seminar, the Working for the Common Good: Education and Development in Bolivia trip provides quality programming, including language interpretation, facilitated by experienced staff and faculty.
Highlights:
The Working for the Common Good: Education and Development in Bolivia program explores key development and educational issues. Other interesting cultural aspects to which participants will be exposed: indigenous issues (including the fact that Bolivia's president, Evo Morales, is the first indigenous president in the Americas), political issues, and the struggle between socialized and private industries. Seminar participants will witness the country's beauty as well, including the majestic snow-covered peaks of the Andes and the highest lake in the world. Participants will also visit the ancient Inca site of Machu Picchu in Peru on their way home.
