Canterbury's academic program is divided amongst five colleges and a school of law. It is well-known for its engineering program, and it is only one of two universities in New Zealand to offer this major. It is the only university to offer speech and language therapy, and astronomy. The university boasts a number of field stations for the study of marine science and geology. It has particular strengths in engineering, biological sciences, chemistry, anthropology, religious studies, philosophy and law, and offers an Antarctic studies program. As an overseas student at Canterbury, you will enroll in 3 or 4 courses per semester for a total of 14-16 hours of credit per semester, or 28-32 per academic year. Canterbury has an international student population of 2,000, with students hailing from all over the globe.International Students are provided with a wide range of support services. The university also has a comfortable and relaxed International Student Support Center, staffed by advisors who are available to assist you throughout your Study Abroad program. Credits and Grades Courses may be selected among various departments. You will earn the following semester hours of credit: Fall and spring semester: 14-16 credits. Academic year: 28-32 credits. Admission Requirements: GPA Requirements: 2.8 or better on a 4.0 scale. You must be in good academic standing and not on disciplinary probation. You need to submit a complete application including a transcript, letter of recommendation, and an advisor's form before your application will be considered.

You can also count on our staff to provide you with guidance concerning the academic calendar and credits, as well as facilitate communication between you and your home school should any course or credit conflicts arise during the registration process. To help you take full advantage of your overseas experience, our resident staff in New Zealand plans cultural events and excursions that you are encouraged to join. These excursions promise to broaden your experience in New Zealand and take you to new and fascinating places.
