Arcadia offers you the unique opportunity to study in Tanzania, an unparalleled academic experience focusing on human-rights education at the Nyerere Centre for Peace Research. In this extraordinarily beautiful country - featuring mountains, lakes and game reserves renowned the world over - you will be ideally positioned to learn about some of the most important international peace initiatives in modern African history. Your international peace studies will focus on the region of East Africa specifically, and will be informed by the work of the legal and developmental human-rights organizations in operation there. Practical approaches to various human-rights issues will be explored, and visits to field sites in Arusha and in the Masai community will round out the peace education experience. This undergraduate summer opportunity is built upon our highly successful master's program in International Peace and Conflict Resolution, which offers a study-abroad opportunity in Tanzania as part of its curriculum. You'll be taught by expert faculty in the field of peace and international conflict studies from Arcadia University and the Nyerere Centre. In addition, you will interact with collaborating partners from the East African Law Society, as well as numerous guest speakers from major African governmental and non-governmental organizations including the East African Community (EAC), the United Nations International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda (UN ICTR), and the African Union Court of Human and People's Rights. Credits and Grades You will earn six semester hours of credit for the four-week program. Admission Requirements GPA Requirements: 3.0 on a 4.0 scale. You must be in good academic standing and not on disciplinary probation. You must submit a complete application including a transcript, letter of recommendation, and an advisor's form in order for your application to be considered.

This unique and intensive peace and conflict study program offers six credits for completion of the four-week summer symposium. You can expect to gain an understanding of development at the community level, and the ways in which grassroots projects build capacity and empower communities. The information you garner from cultural and experiential exchangewill be invaluable as you consider links between East and West, theory and practice, diplomacy and development, and international peace and conflict resolution. About the Nyerere Centre for Peace Research The Nyerere Centre was established by Arcadia University in partnership with the East African Community (EAC). The EAC is the regional intergovernmental organization of Burundi, Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania, and Uganda. Its headquarters are located in Arusha, Tanzania. The EAC aims at widening and deepening cooperation among the partner states in political, economic and social fields for their mutual benefit. The Centre is a state-of-the-art international peace and conflict resolution research and training facility. A fully-equipped classroom with video conferencing equipment, as well as a computer lab, offer students excellent academic resources. The Centre is adjacent to the Arusha International Conference Centre, which hosts the UN ICTR, the EAC, and the African Union's Court for Human and Peoples' Rights, as well as many other international development organizations. About Arusha A city of about 270,000 located in the Arusha region of Northern Tanzania, Arusha typifies what modern Africa is all about. Its international relevance is heralded by the fact that it is known as the Geneva of Africa, as it has played host to the signing of numerous peace treaties and agreements. More recently there have been several attempts there to build peace in Darfur. Situated in close proximity to some of the most famous landscapes in Africa, Arusha lies below Mount Meru, where it has its own national park. Also nearby are the Serengeti, the Ngorongoro Crater, Lake Manyara, Olduvai Gorge, and Mount Kilimanjaro. Pleasant weather, lovely natural environs, and a lively social scene make this one of the world's most vibrant cities.
