Description:
Where in the World do YOU Want to Go? Welcome to one of the most exhilarating college programs on earth--Outdoor Adventure! Algonquin College in the Ottawa Valley is the leader in outdoor training in Eastern Canada. Read about the adventures of some of our recent graduates in Africa and adventures from the Yukon to Central America. A trip to Costa Rica is part of Algonquin College's curriculum through a general elective course called Rainforest & Tropical Science. Outdoor Adventure is a two-year skills-intensive, and certification-based diploma program that offers students a broad education in the high adventure travel and tourism industries. If you want a career where you truly love what you do, this is the program for you! This full-time program is offered at the Ottawa Valley Campus in Pembroke, Ontario, which is surrounded by fantastic natural resources in the beautiful and rugged Ottawa Valley. Sitting on the shores of the mighty Ottawa River, the campus is in close proximity to world-renowned Algonquin Park, alpine ski hills, and some of North America's leading outdoor adventure companies. The success of our program can be partly contributed to our business partner, Wilderness Tours. Our students study at the Pembroke Campus three days a week learning fundamental industry, business and management skills - graduates will have the required business training to step into a supervisory or management role, or start their own adventure or outfitting business.
Highlights:
All practical training takes place at the Wilderness Tours' Beachburg or Mt. Pakenham facility (two days a week). It is during these two days when our students learn the practical aspects of the Outdoor Adventure industry and work towards certification as guides or instructors in their chosen fields. These practical training activities include whitewater kayaking and rafting, rock and ice climbing, cross country cycling, skiing and snowboarding, and many others. Algonquin College's practical training site at Wilderness Tours also includes the use of cabins, hot tubs, and a variety of other outstanding facilities. On top of all this, there are also four multi-day expeditions: rafting in Quebec and Maine; winter camping in the Ottawa Valley; sea kayaking off the Maritime coast; and a self-planned and executed 'final expedition'. Students also participate in a 10-week summer industry self-directed work term in order to put to use all of their training.
