Introduction to Conflict Management
Italy
Term: Spring
Dates: Call CEA or visit our website.
Description:
Conflicts represent an integral part of human experience, and concern both personal and public relationships. They range from the micro level of individuals to the macro dimension of international and global concerns. They can be a source of positive development and growth or, on the contrary, a source of uncontrolled violence and destruction depending on how they are managed. The first part of this course aims at presenting you with a general introduction to the theory of conflicts and their constructive management (elements, causes, mechanisms and instruments for fostering them) as related to the specific context of human rights protection. A sequence of case studies will help you explore the complexities of armed conflicts, peace-keeping missions, international war crimes and the global rise of religious violence, and will also provide an introduction to the birth, evolution and contemporary challenges of human rights organisations, humanitarian law and international systems to maintain peace or restore justice. The second part of the course allows you to specifically investigate and evaluate non-violence in its principles, characteristics, methods and practices through the analysis of some real-life case histories and the experience of some of its most authoritative past and contemporary representatives. In order to facilitate your understanding of these issues, and to engender individual skills of listening and constructive empathy, this course offers you some first-hand experience in methods of non-violent training, and management of group decisional processes through some educational techniques like, facilitated collaborative discussions, role games and simulations.
