London South Bank University has been involved in the programme for many years. Traditionally, language students have been the main beneficiaries of the programme, spending a semester or a year of their degree studying at another European university. However, the programme is also open to students from other subject areas, and to teaching staff. Some partner institutions offer study programmes in English, with the added opportunity to learn the national language.

Socrates-Erasmus is an exchange programme. London South Bank University agrees to receive a yearly quota of students and teaching staff from each partner institution (incoming). This quota matches the number of places reserved for LSBU students and teaching staff at the partner institution (outgoing).

Students who take part in the programme are sent by their home university; they do not pay fees to the receiving institution; nor do they gain an award (e.g. Bachelor) from the receiving institution. For one semester or one year, they follow a programme of study deemed equivalent to that of their home university. The marks obtained during their Erasmus period of study count towards their degree at the home university.

Highlights: Erasmus is the higher education section of the European Community action programme called Socrates, so you may hear about the programme as either Socrates or Erasmus, or both, Socrates-Erasmus.
