Vietnam: Culture and Development
Vietnam
- All Other Areas in Vietnam:
Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon)
Term: Fall, Spring
Dates: September to December/February to May
Description:
The School for International Training's Study Abroad programs offer field-based study in over 57 countries. Students earn 16 semester credits on a 15-week experience designed to encourage a global awareness that enables people to live and act in an interdependent world. Groups of seven to 25 students are lead by one or two academic directors. Viet Nam has emerged from decades of war and isolation to become one of the most dynamic and fastest-growing countries in Asia. Yet as the Vietnamese people seek to integrate with the international community, the pressure of globalization threatens to displace traditional cultural values, and economic development has brought serious social and environmental costs. In SIT Study Abroad's Viet Nam program, you observe these changes firsthand in the vibrant commercial and cultural center of Ho Chi Minh City. Your classroom studies at the National University are complemented by field excursions to the wet rice villages of the Mekong Delta, the Cu Chi wartime tunnels, and Ho Chi Minh City's unique museums. You will travel north to Hanoi, Ha Long Bay, and the old imperial citadel of Hue to explore the effects of development and tourism on Viet Nam's rich but fragile heritage.
Highlights:
Three weeks in Ho Chi Minh City. Educational excursions to Hue, Cu Chi, Mekong Delta, Hanoi, Can Tho, Ha Long Bay, Hoi An.
