Nepal: Social Entrepreneurship in the Himalayas

  Nepal
  • Kathmandu:
  • Kathmandu

Term: Fall, Spring
Dates: September to December/February to May

Description: Renowned for its dramatic scenery, from the peaks of the Himalayas to the remnants of tropical jungles in the Terai, Nepal is also a land of contrasting and complex ethnic and linguistic groups. Many of Nepal's traditional communities have been shaped by their physical environment and the availability of natural resources. Today, the demands of a developing country, a growing population, and expanding tourism are placing increasing pressure on already scarce resources.

Your study of this changing region is based in Kathmandu and is augmented by field excursions to rural areas in the lower Himalayas and the Terai. Through an examination of topics ranging from the role of women in natural resource management to rural religious practices, you gain an in-depth understanding of the challenges Nepalis face as they balance their desire for development with the preservation of Nepal's fragile environment.

Highlights: Five weeks homestay in the Kathmandu Valley plus a ten-day homestay with a rural family. Educational excursions to Bhaktapur, Manang, and the Terai (conditions permitting).
