Emory Sociology-Comparative Health Program
England
Term: Summer
Description:
Academic Focus: Comparative Health Care Systems Program Information: The Department of Sociology and the School of Public Health jointly offer a six-week seminar and field study program focusing on issues and problems in health care delivery in Great Britain and the United States. Emphasis is on the comparative social organization of the two countries, contrasting the evolution and current status of the two health care systems. Classroom work includes seminars at University College in London. Emory University sociologists, British professors, and London-area health care personnel conduct these sessions. Daily seminars during the first week concentrate on the origins and description of the British National Health Service and the U.S. health care system. Subsequent seminar meetings pertain to various components of health services in Britain. Daily seminars during the last week integrate previous lectures and culminate in a student debate. Visits to health-related sites occur during the middle four weeks of the program. Students will explore health-related cultural institutions, visit hospitals and other relevant agencies. Students serve as observers in London health care settings such as emergency rooms, medical social services, hospital specialty services, general medical practice offices, etc. several days a week during the second and third OR fourth and fifth weeks of the program. To the extent possible, the program places students in internships of their choice. Special events include plays, dinners, and day excursions to Cambridge, Oxford, and other locales. Students have most weekends free for travel and sightseeing. Eligibility Requirements: Minimum 2.0 GPA; good academic standing; at least 18 years of age; completion of a full year of college; and currently enrolled in a college/university. Selection of participants depends on background in social sciences, demonstrated interest in health care, year in school, and GPA. Summer: Applications will be accepted starting January 2. The deadline for receipt of applications is March 2. Please note that some programs close before the end of January.
