Academic Focus: Middle Eastern Studies Program Information: The Emory Summer Program in Middle Eastern Studies in Turkey, offered through the Department of Middle Eastern and South Asian Studies and based at the prestigious Bogazici University in Istanbul, is a five-week intensive course that will introduce students to history and civilizations of the lands of Turkey as well as to the ways in which this multilayered past is represented in the museums, monuments, and archaeological sites of the Turkish Republic today. Turkey stands at geographical and historical crossroads, and students will have the opportunity to experience the diverse histories and cultures that marked this countrys rich and colorful past. While in Istanbul, a typical day will include a morning session on campus, with an hour of conversational Turkish language instruction and two hours of lecture; in the afternoon we will visit sites and monuments in the city that relate to the day's lecture theme. Several excursions to sites and museums in Turkey are also planned. Application deadlines: Summer: Summer study abroad applications will be accepted starting January 2. Applicants must submit to CIPA the Emory Summer Study Abroad Application with all accompanying documents and a $350 non-refundable deposit. The entire application must be complete for you to be considered for summer study abroad. The final deadline for receipt of applications is March 3. Some programs generally close before the end of January, so early application is advised. Depending on the program, applications are either considered on a rolling basis in order of receipt or periodically reviewed as a group. Once programs are full, applicants will be placed on a waiting list. Late applications will be considered for those programs not yet full.

Courses: All program participants take a total of eight Emory credit hours. MESAS 370R: From the Hittites to the Republic: Turkey Through Time Description: 8 credit hours. (Roxani Margariti, Billie Jean Collins) Course themes include native and foreign traditions in art and architecture, civilizations of Anatolias past, religion before monotheism, the Greeks in Turkey, faith and power in Byzantium, the birth of the Ottoman state, Islamic art history and archaeology in Ottoman context, and the construction of the past in the modern Turkish Republic.(Summer 2008)

Cost Include Description:
Cost includes an academic fee ($6,420) and a program fee ($1,500 for room, partial board, and insurance). This total includes eight semester credit hours, health and accident insurance (duration of program), accommodations, two meals daily, reading packets, cultural activities, and excursions.

Minimum 2.5 GPA; good academic standing; at least 18 years of age; completion of a full year of college; and currently enrolled in a college/university.

Scholarships are Available. - Emory College students who qualify are considered by the Office of Financial Aid for a summer aid award after registration in summer study abroad classes. The amount of the award depends on the number of credits and current financial aid package. Students currently receiving financial aid from Emory are typically eligible. Contact the Office of Financial Aid for information about specific awards. Emory Scholars are informed separately about the procedures for Scholars Summer Study Abroad awards. Emory University Employee Courtesy Scholarships may be applied to the academic fee portion of the summer study abroad program's cost.
