Description:
The German Studies Department celebrates its 35th anniversary of taking students to Vienna, one of the great capitals of Central Europe so that they become intimately familiar with the culture, language, history, and everyday life. Students without any knowledge of German will take beginning German language classes; students at the intermediate level can complete their second year of German; and more advanced students will study Austrian cultural history from a European perspective. In addition, students can take a music course and explore the city's rich musical heritage, coordinated with the concert and opera schedule, or study the history of mountaineering in Austria. Accommodations are provided in local homestays. Eligibility Requirements: Minimum 2.5 GPA; good academic standing; at least 18 years of age; completion of a full year of college; and currently enrolled in a college/university. GER 101/102 for MUS 202 Summer: Applications will be accepted starting January 2. The deadline for receipt of applications is March 2. Please note that some programs close before the end of January.
Highlights:
Academic Focus: German Studies: Language, Culture, and Music Courses: All program participants take two courses for a total of eight Emory credit hours. Students may take 12 credit hours for an additional academic fee of USD 3,390. Students without any previous knowledge of German will take Beginning German 101 and 102. Students at the intermediate level can complete their second year of German (201 and 202), while more advanced students are offered a course sequence on Austrian cultural history taught from an European perspective. GER 101 Beginning German I Description: 4 credit hours GER 102 Beginning German II Description: 4 credit hours GER 201 Intermediate German I Description: 4 credit hours GER 202 Intermediate German II Description: 4 credit hours GER 370A The Austrian Experience Description: 4 credit hours GER 370B The Austrian Experience Description: 4 credit hours GER 460 German Studies Seminar - Alpine Forever: The History of Exploartion and Mountaineering Description: 4 credit hours MUS 202 Music History of the Baroque, Classic and Romantic Periods Description: 4 credit hours Music in Vienna will be taught in German (if all class participants have at least an intermediate German knowledge) and coordinated with the Vienna's concert and opera schedule. Additional work will be required of music majors for the course to be counted toward the Music Major. Living Arrangements: Students live in Viennese homes.

Cost Include Description:
Cost includes an academic fee (USD 7,120) and a program fee (USD 2,000) for room, breakfast, and insurance. This total includes eight semester hours, health and accident insurance (duration of program), accommodations in local homestays, breakfast, all program - related field trips, and reimbursement for all program - related cultural activities in Vienna.
