Academic Focus: Chinese Studies: Language, Culture, and the Arts Program Information: The Emory Summer Chinese Program, offered through the Department of Russian, and East Asian Languages and Cultures, provides students an exciting opportunity to study Chinese language, culture, and the arts in Beijing, China's fascinating capital and site of the 2008 Olympic Games. Participants will tour the Great Wall, Tiananmen Square, and the Forbidden City, and see acrobatic and martial arts performances. In addition to excursions to numerous cultural sites in Beijing, visits to Chengde, Shandong, and Pingyao are planned. The program collaborates with the prestigious Beijing Normal University, offering courses on Chinese language at all levels and a course on the history, culture, and society of China's last dynasty in English. All program participants take two courses for a total of eight Emory credit hours. CHN 105 Language and Culture of Northwestern China CHN/ASIA 273 Heritage of China NO knowledge of Mandarin Chinese is required, as beginner students learn practical Mandarin Chinese. Special tutorials will be arranged for heritage speakers of Chinese and for students with two or more years of Chinese. Eligibility Requirements: Minimum 2.0 GPA; good academic standing; at least 18 years of age; completion of a full year of college; and currently enrolled at a college/university. Summer: Applications for Summer 2010 will be accepted starting January 4. The deadline for receipt of applications is March 2. Please note that some programs close before the end of January.

Courses: Program participants take two courses for a total of 8 Emory credit hours. Summer program credits can be used to satisfy Chinese major and minor requirements. Living Arrangements: Accommodations are at Liyun Xueyuan on the campus of Beijing Normal University. There are two-bedroom and one bedroom apartments.

Cost includes an academic fee (USD 7,120) and a program fee (USD 2,100) for room, board, and insurance. This total includes eight semester hours, health and accident insurance (duration of program), accommodations in residence halls, three meals a day, excursion expenses in Beijing, and transportation to other locations in China.
