Emory British Studies Program in England
England
Term: Summer
Description:
The British Studies Program is held at University College, officially the oldest and (unofficially) one of the most beautiful colleges in Oxford. Students will live, dine, and study in an atmosphere incomparably rich in cultural heritage and intellectual accomplishment. They have use of all college facilities, including the library, the "cellar," croquet pitch, and squash court. Customarily, no classes occur on Friday, so students have ample time for weekend travel or for enjoyment of Oxford's many riches: the world's greatest bookstore (Blackwell's), the Ashmolean Museum, the Holywell Music Rooms, the Cotswolds, Blenheim Palace, and punting on the Cherwell. This year, the curriculum consists of a wide variety of offerings in British studies, including courses in Shakespeare, literature, history, political science, and religion. In addition, the program features lectures on aspects of British society and culture by distinguished speakers together with visits to individual classes by outstanding figures in their fields. The program also sponsors sojourns to Stratford-upon-Avon, London, and the environs of Oxford, plus a special four-day trip to Scotland, visiting cultural and historical venues in Edinburgh and other towns. All program participants take two courses for a total of eight Emory credit hours.
