Intensive Arabic in Haifa
Israel
Dates: August 3 - August 27
Description:
The University of Haifa has the largest Arabic-speaking student population among Israeli universities, which creates an ideal environment for Arabic language studies. The city is proud of its long-standing record of co-existence and mutual respect among the Jewish, Christian, Muslim, Bahai, and Druze communities. Reflecting and supporting this tradition, the University of Haifa is likewise a multicultural institution in which students benefit from many opportunities for productive interaction. The Intensive Arabic Summer Program is an introduction to Modern Standard/Literary Arabic and will be taught in the summer of 2009 at the elementary level only. Class sessions will focus on learning the Arabic alphabet as well as grammar, reading, writing, pronunciation, and translation. The course will cover basic morphology and syntax of Modern Standard Arabic, including verb patterns. Classes meet four days a week, five hours each day, and students can expect several hours of homework every day. One day each week will be devoted to a field trip to visit locations of interest in Arab communities in the northern parts of Israel. The course is taught in English and is designed for students with no prior knowledge of the Arabic language. The Arabic Language Summer Program awards five academic credits.
