Emory University of Salamanca Program

  Spain
  • Salamanca:
  • Salamanca

Term: Fall, Spring
Dates: Jan.-June or Sept.-Dec.

Description: Salamanca is an ancient Spanish city of about 160,000 inhabitants and the location of one of the oldest most prestigious universities in Europe. The Emory semester program offers Emory students the opportunity to take Spanish language courses, Culture courses, 2 English-taught Psychology Courses and/or an English-taught in a Spanish setting. Students with good language skills take most of their courses in Spanish and have the opportunity to take a wider range of courses. Students with little language preparation can take appropriate Spanish language courses and some other courses in English.

Students will take 4 courses and earn 16 credit hours. Students may also enroll in regular university courses in disciplines such as History, Literature, Geography, Sociology, Anthropology, Psychology, Political Science, and Economics. Students who take regular university courses are assigned a tutor who meets with them two hours weekly to review course material and answer questions. In fall semester, students may enroll in ONE universidad course only; in spring semester, students may enroll in TWO universidad courses.

Highlights: The program is based in Salamanca, centrally located in Spain, just two hours west from Madrid, Spain's capital, and close to Portugal. This strategic centric situation is useful in order to organize the extensive fieldtrips included in the Program: Seville, Barcelona, Valencia, Galicia, Madrid.

Students attend the Universidad de Salamanca, one of the oldest and most prestigious universities in Europe, founded in the 13th century, with worldwide reputation in Spanish language teaching and Hispanic studies. The Universidad de Salamanca holds a population of 40,000 students, which include local Spanish and European students. This flow of students makes Salamanca a very young city devoted completely to students, with a wide offer of regular cultural activities (theater, concerts, art exhibitions, local celebrations) and a unique and lively nightlife. In contrast to other bigger cities in Europe, Salamanca University environment offers a safe and comfortable place to study, as well as a variety of cultural activities at a reasonable cost.
