University College London, founded in 1826, is the oldest and largest college of the University of London. It was the third university institution to be established in England, after Oxford and Cambridge, and the first to admit students regardless of class, race, religion or sex. With over 16,000 students and 4,000 staff members, it is one of the largest and most diverse institutions in the United Kingdom, as well as one of the most prestigious. The academic buildings of UCL are located near Regent's Park in the heart of the Bloomsbury district of London. The spacious and beautiful original buildings house many of the academic departments and the central library. Close by are the British Museum and the British Library, as well as other cultural attractions of London. Also nearby are major national art galleries, museums, theatres, cinemas, opera houses as well as the main shopping district of the West End. The academic year in the United Kingdom runs along roughly the same guidelines as the American academic year. It begins in late September and ends in mid-June. Teaching terms usually consist of three ten-week periods separated by two four-week breaks, but increasing numbers of universities have switched over to the semester system.
