Bristol, the 'Capital of the Southwest,' sits majestically between the rolling hills of southern Wales and the sweeping plains of southwest England. From the 17th-19th century, Bristol served as the second largest seaport in the country. Now the dock areas house trendy boutiques and cultural centers The university, located in a residential neighborhood, is known for a level of academic excellence similar to Oxford and Cambridge. Students enjoy full integration in a traditional British atmosphere. The Institute for Study Abroad, Butler University welcomes students of all majors on its program at the University of Bristol.

The long history of university education in the United Kingdom dates back to the foundation of Oxford and Cambridge Universities in the mid 13th century. Students who attend university in the U.K. have the opportunity to mix with international students from every country on earth who came to the U.K. to experience the same scholastic prestige. The academic year in the United Kingdom runs along roughly the same guidelines as the American academic year. It begins in late September and ends in mid-June. Teaching terms usually consist of three ten-week periods separated by two four-week breaks, but increasing numbers of universities have switched over to the semester system.
