IFSA-Butler at University of Technology, Sydney
Australia
Term: Academic Year, Fall, Spring
Dates: February - November
Description:
The University of Technology, Sydney has a unique place in Australian higher education. UTS provides higher education for professional practice that anticipates and responds to community needs and social and technological change. It is Australia's largest provider of cooperative education, and students benefit from its strong ties to business and industry. UTS was originally founded in 1964 as the New South Wales Institute of Technology. In response to a need for professional vocational education in New South Wales, UTS received university status in 1988 when it merged with the School of Design of the Sydney College of Art. It expanded again in 1990 by merging with the Kuring-Gai College of Advanced Education and the Institute of Technical and Adult Teacher Education of the Sydney College of Advanced Education. UTS is a multi-campus institution with four locations in the Sydney metropolitan area. IFSA-Butler students can expect to study primarily (but not only) at the central City campus in Broadway and in the Haymarket area. The City campus houses nine teaching facilities. The UTS Union is the community center for students and staff. It offers a diverse range of amenities: food, drink, lounges and recreational areas. The Union organizes a year-round social and cultural program that includes dances, concerts, films, barbecues, creative leisure courses, art exhibition, plays and speakers. It also sponsors a wide variety of clubs and societies. UTS has no housing of its own. IFSA-Butler students are housed at Unilodge, an inter-university housing complex specifically designed for students. Located less than 10 minutes by foot from UTS, Unilodge has no meal plan but includes kitchen facilities, so students can prepare their own meals or purchase them locally. The Darlington area near Unilodge provides an endless array of pubs, restaurants, dance clubs, bookstores and shops. Students can reach downtown Sydney by bus in five minutes and beaches in twenty minutes.
Highlights:
Australia is a land of compelling extremes. The oldest datable land forms on earth are found in Australia, but it was the last continent to be discovered by Western explorers. It is the longest continuously inhabited continent on earth but has a written history of only 213 years. It is the smallest continent on the planet but it is also the largest island. Settled as a convict prison, today the country of Australia is one of the freest democratic societies in the world. As large as the continental United States in land area, it is home to barely 18 million people, the same population as the state of California. In a land of vast unsettled spaces, over 80 percent of the population lives in one of the five major cities. Originally the European settlers were almost exclusively English and Irish. Today the country has sizable populations of Italians, Greeks, Malays, Indonesians and Chinese to enrich the cultural mix of this once isolated island. It is this diversity and this incredible backdrop that make Australia truly an education by itself. Combine this with the academic excellence of its universities, and you have a study abroad destination like no other. The academic year in Australia is reversed due to the seasonal inversion in the southern hemisphere. The academic year roughly follows the calendar year, beginning in late February and ending in late November. The application deadlines for IFSA-Butler programs in Australia are November 15 for the spring semester and academic year and March 15 for the fall semester. Remember that if you leave in February for your 'spring' semester, you will be arriving in Australia at the end of their summer and will stay until the middle of their winter season.
