University of Regensburg, Germany
Germany
Term: Academic Year
Dates: Academic Year
Description:
Location Description: Regensburg is located in Bavaria, one of the most distinctive regions of Germany. Settled first by the Celts in prehistoric times, it was a Roman center for centuries and then the capital of Bavaria in the Middle Ages. After that, it remained an important city and trade center. Regensburg is now a thriving city of approximately 150,000 and is a major port on the Danube with beautiful and well-preserved architecture as well as striking, modern buildings. It is only a short distance from both Munich and Nuremberg and within easy access to Vienna, Prague, and other major centers of Central Europe. Academic Overview: The University of Regensburg was established in 1962 and since that time has become one of the outstanding universities in Germany. Its student body presently numbers close to 16,000. The university is known for excellence in the natural and social sciences. One of its largest departments is that of Catholic theology, reflecting the dominant religious preference of Bavarians. New option starting in 2006-07: engineering students with sufficient language background may take engineering courses at the Fachhochschule, just next door to the University of Regensburg. There are two tracks for study in Regensburg. You will begin studying early in September with an intensive language and orientation program. Then, depending on your background in the German language, you will either take regular university courses or continue to study intensive German for the Wintersemester: If you have taken at least two years of college-level German or the equivalent, you will take the language examination for international students entering German universities at the end of the six-week intensive course. Upon passing the language examination, you will enroll directly in University of Regensburg courses. Nearly all academic fields are represented at the university. Although there are no engineering courses at the university, engineering students may take engineering classes at the Fachhochschule Regensburg. Virtually all beginning and intermediate university courses (Vorlesungen, Proseminare, and Übungen) are open to you if you have the academic and linguistic background for them. If you should need extra help with a class, some tutorial assistance is available. If you have completed GRMN 1020 at CU-Boulder in the semester prior to your study in Regensburg, you will be participating in what we call the Mittelstufe option. This option is only available for current CU-Boulder students. After an intensive course in September, you will enroll in a semester of German courses taught for foreigners by faculty of the University of Regensburg. At the conclusion of these courses, you will take the language examination for international students entering German universities. Then you will enroll in regular University of Regensburg courses for the Sommersemester. This option may be available to CU-Boulder students who complete GRMN 2110 in the spring before the program starts, but they must be aware that they may have to take remedial credit during the first semester.
