  South Africa
  • Other Cities in South Africa:
  • Stellenbosch

Term: Summer
Dates: June - July

Description: Stellenbosch, South Africa's second oldest town, after Cape Town, is in the world's most beautiful wine country: the Jonkershoek Valley on the southern tip. Superb beaches are a half hour away. Scenic mountains nearly 5,000 feet high form a spectacular backdrop to the town. Stellenbosch is host to music, theater and the arts; art galleries, restaurants, shops and hotels dot oak-lined streets, while numerous parks, gardens, nature reserves and playing fields contribute to the town's beauty. The Mediterranean-like climate is temperate year round, making it the ideal location for outdoor activities.

AIFS students take 4 weeks of courses in English at Stellenbosch University in Service Learning, African studies, art, business, economics, geography, history, law, literature, political science, sociology, and viticulture.

AIFS program fees include the basics and the extras: tuition, housing, some meals, excursions and cultural activities, airfare if selected, 6-day Garden Route tour, visit to the Cederberg Mountains, and more.

AIFS Summer Abroad in Stellenbosch, South Africa

Highlights: Students live in a University residence hall in single rooms. They take breakfast in the residence hall cafeteria and receive funds to subsidize lunch and dinner every day. Bed and breakfast accommodations are provided in London and on the Garden Route tour. Stellenbosch is at the foot of Table Mountain on the southern tip of Africa, with mountains in the backdrop and beaches a half hour away. The University of Stellenbosch is one of the finest academic institutions in Africa with modern, extensive library facilities, technology network, and more.

The staff of the University's International Office arrange a wide variety of activities, including vineyard tours, wine tastings and a visit to the African township of Kayamandi. A 6-day tour of the Garden Route is included in the program fees, along with trips to Cape Town and to the Cape of Good Hope. In Cape Town students experience the vibrant city center, including a visit to Parliament, where they see South African politicians in action. From the top of Table Mountain in Cape Town, students can view the panorama of the magnificent Western Cape in all its splendor. During an academic visit to the natural heritage sight of the Cape of Good Hope, students learn more about the biodiversity of a local nature reserve. During a day trip to Robben Island students visit the prison where Nelson Mandela spent 27 years of his life in exile.
