Film and the French Aesthetic in Paris, France
France
Term: Summer
Dates: third week of May to early June
Description:
The program takes place in Paris, France. Excursions will cover the following sites in and outside the city: * The Rodin Museum * The Pompidou Center * Chartres Cathedral * The Musee d'Orsay * The Musee du Cinema You will also be expected to visit sites in Paris on your own that will be discussed in class such as La Defense and Montmartre. This interdisciplinary course will provide you with an exceptional opportunity to study the relationships between film, culture, and art within the context of French society. The program combines screenings and lectures in English with visits to museums and specific sites in and outside Paris that have historical, cultural, and artistic significance. You will watch full-length feature films (on video) that focus on certain aspects of French art and architecture, then visit some of the actual sites that appear on film. You will also study the work of specific artists like Rodin and Renoir in order to understand the relationships between cinema and painting. The course is divided into four sections: 1) Versions of Paris: We will study how Paris is used as an urban setting by comparing original locations in the city to their representations on film. 2) Artists and Their Muses: We will focus on how a film seeks to represent the life and work of an artist. In this connection, we'll also discuss how specific works of art acquire new frameworks of meaning when they appear on film. 3) Art into Film: This section will deal with the relationships between film and painting, specifically how an artist's work shapes a film in terms of content and form. 4) Movies about Movies: We will examine films that deal with the art of making movies within the context of the French film industry. This will be followed by a trip to the Musee du Cinema.
