interstudy: Swansea University - Wales
Wales
Term: Academic Year, Fall, Spring
Dates: Late September - Early December / Late January - Early June
Description:
The Swansea University was founded in 1920 and is one of the six constituent institutions of the federal University of Wales. Swansea, with approximately 10,500 students, has the advantage of being large enough to support a wide range of academic and social activity while small enough to provide the sense of belonging and community often absent at larger institutions. The academic nature of the University is diversified, dominated neither by the Arts nor the Sciences. Located on the wide sweep of Swansea Bay, the University is ideally situated in a large area of parkland, two miles west of the city center with the Gower Peninsula extending some fifteen miles to its west. The student population at Swansea includes undergraduates from all parts of the British Isles and from many different backgrounds. There is also a significant international student population. interstudy students are enrolled in classes which are offered as part of the university's degree programs and participate fully in lectures, seminars, tutorials and practical classes with the university's full-time undergraduate students. Swansea is Wales' second largest city with a population of over 200,000. The city is lively and modern, with an exciting nightlife and offers both old market areas and a shopping mall connecting dozens of shops by an undercover walkway. The Swansea area is rich in outdoor activities, being a center for sailing, water skiing, wind-surfing and sea angling, as well as offering scope for rock climbing, caving, riding and hang-gliding. Just 20 miles to the northeast are the Brecon Beacons, a National Park with hills and rugged mountains ideal for walkers and mountaineers. With excellent road and railway connections, Swansea is easily accessible from all parts of the United Kingdom, with London less than three hours away by train. A regular direct ferry link connects Swansea to Cork, Ireland.
