Morocco
Term: Academic Year, Fall, Summer, Winter
Dates: Please refer to the ISA website
Description:
Meknès (population 450,000), also known as the "Versailles of Morocco", provides visitors and residents intimate views of the unique blend of Islamic and European influences. The diverse and distinct districts of Meknès, such as the bustling ville nouvelle (modern center), ancient labyrinthine medina (walled city), and relaxing plazas and green spaces, speak true to the traditional Moroccan lifestyle. Due to the cultural and historic richness found within the walls of the city, Meknès was declared a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1996; one of eight within Morocco. In between classes at Moulay Ismail University, students can visit the local ISA office to check e-mail, receive tutoring, find out about upcoming local events and ISA group excursions, or simply chat with the ISA staff, fellow students, and practice Arabic.
Highlights:
Make sure not to miss: - The medina and old mellah (old Jewish quarter) - The Dar Jamaï Museum, a palace built in 1882 for the Jamaï family - The mausoleum of Moulay Ismail - The Heri es-Souani and Agdal Basin, the immense and ingeniously designed granaries of Moulay Ismail - The Berber carpet shops and colorful souqs of the medina - The Place el-Hedim-Bab el-Mansour and Bab Berdaine, two of many impressive gates entering into the medina, and once imperial city
