CIEE Study Center at Stellenbosch University: Summer

  South Africa
    Stellenbosch

Term: Summer
Dates: 5 weeks: mid-June - mid-July

Description: The summer program at the CIEE Study Center at Stellenbosch University provides students with a range of academic, intellectual, and intercultural experiences that enable them to witness and take part in the complex process of transformation in South Africa. From the campus community to the greater society beyond Stellenbosch, students become participants in, rather than mere observers of, this dynamic and evolving environment. Through this process, students gain a comprehensive understanding of the evolving story that is South Africa.

Academic Program
Students on this program explore the unprecedented changes that have occurred in South Africa in recent years. By exploring elements of South Africa's history, political system, and multi-racial society, students will gain insight into the challenges impacting South Africa today and acquire appreciation for the amazing strides that have occurred within society since the end of Apartheid. Further, students will visit various corners of the Western Cape and learn first-hand about its rich biodiversity and unique landscapes. Through a combination of coursework, field studies, community engagement, and an evening cultural program, students will experience South Africa from multiple angles and develop new perspectives on this magnificent country.

Academic Culture
Course enrollment is small, and there is significant interaction between students and faculty. Each of the courses combines lectures, discussions, excursions, and other activities. Students engage in course-related lectures and activities from early morning through early evening during almost every day of the program. Depending on the courses selected, there are also specific days set aside for fieldwork and community engagement activities. The program is scheduled to maximize the students experience during the five week period. Students should not plan on any independent travel prior to or during the program.

Highlights:

  • Gain insight into South African history, politics, economics, and culture
  • Explore the beauty and diversity of the Western Cape through integrated excursions which highlight topics discussed in class
  • Participate in innovative cultural workshops on the South African wine industry, Afrikkans and Xhosa language, and South African music and cinema
  • Live on a beautiful campus in a college town setting

Culture
Cultural Activities and Field Trips
