  • Central Highlands

Term: Summer
Dates: Early - late July

Description: Edge of the Outback Program offers you the chance to gain or enhance your digital photography skills while exploring regional Australia. Throughout the course you will travel through a world heritage area containing evidence of 50,000 years of Aboriginal occupation, the Murray Darling river system, one of the world's largest river systems, and the National Parks of Mutawinji and Mungo.

The three-week program Edge of the Outback takes place at La Trobe University's Mildura campus. The Mildura campus is a regional campus of La Trobe University. Workshops will be led by photography faculty from La Trobe University's School of Visual Arts. You will have access to the following facilities at La Trobe University: color darkroom and color print processor to print type C photographs; extensive black and white darkrooms; alternative process darkroom for cyanotypes & gum prints; fully equipped studio with tungsten and flash lighting systems; and access to the Macintosh computer laboratory running Adobe and Macromedia software.

Highlights: Topics covered in the course will include concepts in photograph, black and white printing with alternate photographic practices, as well as Discussion of SLR camera operation and maintenance. Previous photography experience is not required for this course. All photographic equipment will be provided, but you are welcome to bring your own camera. Workshops and a major field trip/excursion will provide the platform for exploration of imagery based on the regions ancient landscape and the sociological layering created by pre and post colonial influences. A local Aboriginal guide, from the Barkindji nation, will join you on the field trip to assist in the interpretation of indigenous culture. At the conclusion of the program you will have the opportunity to exhibit you work in a local gallery.

The regions capital city, Mildura - population 51,200 - located on the banks for the Murray River, is a vibrant and cosmopolitan city with a Mediterranean climate and multicultural population supported by irrigated horticulture and cultural tourism. World class wines and fresh produce, restaurants, cafes, an active arts culture and busy year round festivals and celebrations are central to its outlook. The region is surrounded by internationally significant National Parks, including Mungo, Mutawintje, Kinchega, Murray Sunset, Mallee Cliffs, Big Desert, Wyperfield and Hattah Kulkine.
