CIS - Tropical Marine Biology Summer Program
Australia
Term: Summer
Dates: mid-June - early July
Description:
Picture yourself exploring the clear waters and coral reefs of Western Australia while learning about its pristine marine habitats. The Tropical Marine Biology Program at Murdoch University will give you the opportunity to combine classroom and hands-on learning during this intensive three-week experience. The highlight of your Program will be a field trip to the Ningaloo Reef, Australia's largest fringing reef, running over 150 miles in length and home to over 500 species of fish including the largest of them all, the Whale Shark. Perth, nestled on the banks of the Swan River, is the capital of Western Australia and home to 1.6 million people and serves as a great starting point for exploring the wonders of Western Australia. With its safe and clean urban environment, 30 miles of sandy white beaches, and more sunshine than any other Australian city, students say Perth is the best part of their experience. Additionally you will spend nearly half of your program in the small resort town of Coral Bay, home to the world-famous Ningaloo Reef.
Highlights:
The Tropical Marine Biology Program is an intensive lecture plus field base course for students with a biology foundation in marine and estuary studies. The Program consists of a one-week lecture series at Murdoch University followed by a 10-day field trip to Coral Bay where students will have hands-on experience exploring the Ningaloo Reef. A series of 15 lectures will provide a physical and biogeographically background to Western Australia coral reefs, a run through of reef biodiversity and details of key biological and ecological processes of coral reefs. Assessment will include a theory exam at Murdoch University, laboratory notebook, and fieldwork report and group presentation.
