The CIS Semester in Barcelona is hosted at the Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB). UAB offers students a unique opportunity to take a variety of courses in one of Spain's top universities. The university has a high population of international students, so no matter what your level of Spanish, there are classes available to you. UAB is committed to excellence in teaching and draws expert faculty from all over Europe and the US. All courses are designed to incorporate the local resources and to immerse students in the Catalan environment through experiential learning. The semester program at UAB offers a variety of exciting Spanish language courses at all levels. In addition, art history, cultural studies, international business, law, political science, marketing, and other Area Studies courses are taught in English, with the exception of a few which are taught in Spanish. Students would take 3 or 4 courses per semester or 12 to 15 credits. Students are strongly encouraged to take 1 Spanish language course (90 hours) and 2 or 3 culture courses (45 hours each). The language course level will depend on the student's placement level which is determined with a placement test upon arrival. All language levels in Spanish are accommodated and are based on the on-site placement exam. Classes are scheduled from Monday through Thursday, leaving plenty of time for exploring the city, visiting museums and galleries, and day tripping with fellow international students.

Barcelona is a mecca for culture enthusiasts, offering a dazzling array of art exhibitions, theater and dance events, film festivals, concerts, lectures, and more. Students studying with CIS at UAB will have plenty of opportunities for social, cultural and recreational experiences that define and enhance their time in Spain. The center of Barcelona, where UAB is located, is also extremely livable for students: UAB students can find grocery stores, Internet cafés, post offices, souvenir shops and tapas bars all within a few blocks of their apartments. Within easy walking distance students can explore numerous museums and churches, the cathedral of Barcelona, and even the beach. Students studying with CIS at the UAB will be offered a variety of opportunities to experience local culture and traditions through events organized exclusively for them the CIS site director. Such activities may include: * Guided tours of the city * Catalan cooking class * A Flamenco Show * Language Exchange groups * Museum & market visits * Spanish Cinema night * Trip to the beach One guided weekend trip in Spain is included in the program fee. Possible weekend trips include: the beautiful Costa Brava, the magical Granada, or majestic Madrid. Students may take advantage of an optional trip to Morocco during the semester for an additional fee.
