Distillery Engineering
Scotland
Term: Summer
Dates: June 15-20 (Islay) and June 20-27 (Glasgow)
Description:
Students on this unique program have the opportunity to spend one week using full scale, 'microchip-free' equipment at the Bruichladdich (pronounced 'brook-laddie') Distillery and a second week in the spectroscopy laboratory at the Pure and Applied Chemistry Department at the University of Strathclyde in Glasgow. This two week program allows engineering and food science majors to participate in hands-on tasks including extraction, fermentation, distillation, casking, reduction, bottling, tasting, and spectroscopy analysis. The distillery, established in 1881, is located in the village of Bruichladdich on the island of Islay (pronounced 'eye-la'). Malt whisky is classified by the location of the distillery where it was made. The four main categories are - Highland, Speyside, Lowland and Islay. There are eight working distilleries on Islay, all internationally known for the fine malt whisky they produce. In addition to being famous for its whisky making, Islay is known as the "Queen of the Hebrides" also has outstanding bird watching, rugged beaches, and the world's first commercial wave-generated power station. The University of Strathclyde, located in the heart of Glasgow, is home to Scotland's largest engineering college. Strathclyde is recognised as an important international centre for engineering research.
Highlights:
Multi-million pound investments by Research Councils, Government and companies such as Rolls Royce and British Energy mean that students have access to the very best specialist research facilities. The course meets the FSU/FAMU College of Engineering requirement for an advanced chemistry elective. It is offered for three credit hours -- a portion of the credit is earned in Islay, and the remaining portion is earned at Strathclyde. Students who are unable to participate in the spectroscopy portion of the course may be approved to complete an independent research assignment upon return to the United States. Students are encouraged to participate on another International Program following the two weeks in Scotland. The engineering program in London may be of particular interest to engineering majors.
