Art and Design in the Netherlands
Netherlands
Term: Summer
Dates: June 28 - August 9
Description:
Art and Design in the Netherlands is a program that utilizes the city of Amsterdam and the surrounding areas as a backdrop for creative expression and cultural study. Students explore the complex languages of drawing, photography, and design from within the contemporary space of the Dutch landscape. Dutch culture is also examined from many angles, including architecture, cultural anthropology, and history. Additionally, visits to the Anne Frank House and the Dutch Resistance Museum explore Amsterdam during World War II, and a visit to the Museum of the Tropics introduces a discussion about colonialism. For modern and contemporary art, trips to the Van Gogh Museum, the Stedelijk Museum, contemporary galleries and design studios are made. Students are also encouraged to participate in field trips outside Amsterdam to Rotterdam, The Hague, Utrecht, Groningen and beyond. During the 17th century, Amsterdam was in its Golden Age. Land was reclaimed from the sea, a massive system of canals throughout the city was built, the population exploded, and early forms of capitalism emerged with a social consciousness unparalleled in Europe at the time. 17th century Dutch art and architecture are examined in detail through visits to the Amsterdam Historical Museum and the Rijksmuseum. Today, Amsterdam is a global center for contemporary art, design, architecture and sustainable living.
Highlights:
Nearly everything in the Netherlands is highly designed: stamps, signage, housing projects, and airports alike are efficiently planned and engineered, as well as pleasing to the eye. The Netherlands itself feels as if it is a result of conscious, rational, and sustainable design, yet spontaneity and beauty are rarely sacrificed. As Aaron Betsky, a chronicler of Dutch design and culture says of the Dutch, "there is a system to everything they do, and yet there is always a touch of the absurd." Students on this program interpret Amsterdam and the surrounding areas through drawing and photography, as well as learn about different art practices and theories. Students are also introduced to Dutch cultural history, Dutch architecture, and Dutch graphic and industrial design.
