Galway, Ireland - Irish Studies
Ireland
Term: Summer
Dates: June 22 - August 3
Description:
Students interested in experiencing rich history and tradition while living in one of the most prosperous and exciting countries in modern Europe can experience the best of past and present on the Irish Studies program in Galway. Based at the National University of Ireland (NUI Galway), students live and attend classes with other program participants at one of Ireland's foremost centers of academic excellence, which was founded in 1845. Situated in close proximity to Connemara Gaeltacht, Ireland's largest Irish-speaking area, the university and the city of Galway reflect the rich cultural benefits of a bilingual environment. In addition to all that is historical, students have the opportunity to delve into the vivid culture and tradition of the country, as well as the extraordinary development of modern Ireland. While, in the past, Ireland suffered with serious problems and population loss due to emigration, circumstances began to change in the mid-1970's. This change culminated in the 1990's with the "Celtic Tiger," a period of remarkable transformation marked by huge economic growth and dramatic rises in the Irish standard of living. Technology and education grew exponentially and have become a major focus of Irish life. Today, modern Ireland is a thriving and prosperous member of the European Union and Irish is one of the EU's official languages. Program courses take advantage of all that is offered by this lively city.
Highlights:
Students use all the resources at their disposal in their study of Irish culture, literature, history, and film.
