Field School in Ecuador

  Ecuador
  • All Other Regions of Ecuador:
  • Tena,  Otavalo

Term: Summer
Dates: June 26 - August 7 (6 Weeks)

Description: Students who prefer to learn by doing and wish to become more fluent in Spanish will want to take advantage of this unique study opportunity. The six week ethnographic field school in the Napo region of Ecuador offers students a chance to learn ethnographic research methods while experiencing firsthand the indigenous cultures of the land. While living in home stays with families, students will study Amazonian culture, history, and community affairs, and will be immersed in activities of daily life. This allows students to become integrated into the community and experience the native culture directly.Classroom instruction introduces students to fieldwork, indigenous cultures, and rainforest ecosystems. Students pursue their own individual research projects. Excursions are planned to the rainforest, Otavalo (an Andes mountain town, known for its tourism and indigenous culture), the thermal baths of Papallacta, and the capital city of Tena. Students also travel to lower Napo to visit a wildlife refuge, botanical gardens, and bilingual intercultural schools.
