Term: Summer
Dates: May 6 - June 17 (6 Weeks)
Description:
Based in the Cairns area of Queensland and featuring a week in Sydney, this program offers students a chance to see the many sides of Australia's varied landscapes. Owing to its location in the southern hemisphere, the dates of the program put students in Australia during their late fall and early winter. Urban Sydney offers cooler temperatures, while tropical Cairns features sunny days and more mild weather. The program begins with a week in Sydney, the state capital of New South Wales, located on the southeast coast of Australia. The program then moves to the Cairns region of the Queensland coast. Known as the gateway to the Great Barrier Reef, it features tropical rain forests, mountains, and access to the outback. The program uses the facilities of James Cook University, a leading teaching and research university known for its expertise in studies of the tropics and biological science. Studies can span global change, Australian and aboriginal peoples and culture, food and environment, and the Great Barrier Reef. Program sponsored excursions include trips to the reef, rain forests, and other sites of environmental and cultural significance.
