Term: Summer
Dates: May 8 - June 19 (6 Weeks)
Description:
Students who want to add plenty of outdoor adventure and natural beauty to their study abroad experience will find the FSU Australia program to be an ideal fit. Based in the Cairns area of Queensland and featuring a week in Sydney, this program offers students a chance to see the many sides of Australia's varied landscapes. Owing to its location in the southern hemisphere, the May to June dates of the program will put students in Australia during the late fall and early winter. Urban Sydney offers cooler temperatures, while tropical Cairns features sunny days and more mild weather. The program begins with a week in Sydney, the state capital of New South Wales, located on the southeast coast of Australia. Founded in 1788, Sydney is now a multicultural city and home to over 4 million people. The city surrounds a beautiful natural harbor, home to the iconic Sydney Opera House, and is a major tourist destination for visitors from around the world. Students will experience a modern, bustling city with a diverse population--almost half of its residents were born overseas. The program will then move to the Cairns region of the Tropical Far North Queensland coast. Known as the gateway to the Great Barrier Reef, Cairns features tropical rainforests, mountains, and access to the outback. The program uses the facilities of James Cook University, a leading teaching and research university known for its expertise in studies of the tropics and biological science, and located on the edge of the rainforest near the Cairns northern beaches. Students may take advantage of this unique location to study oceanography and natural science, with program sponsored excursions to the reef, rainforests, and other sites of environmental significance. The study of humanities will allow students to learn about Australian life, aboriginal peoples, and other aspects of this diverse and exciting land. Hospitality courses will focus on the significant role that hospitality management and tourism, particularly ecotourism, play in this region of Queensland, where the World Heritage listed natural wonders of reef and rainforest sit side-by-side.
