Description: The Environmental Sciences in Japan (ESJ) program is designed for natural science and public policy students who want to add international dimensions to their careers, at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. The program is co-sponsored by Michigan State University (the Institute of International Health, International Studies and Programs, the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources, and the College of Natural Science), the University of Shiga Prefecture, and the member universities of the Japan Center for Michigan Universities (JCMU Consortium).

Highlights: The ESJ program includes study of Japanese language and culture, a keystone course entitled 'Environmental Issues in Japan,', field trips to environmentally sensitive sites, and internship programs with Japanese laboratories, universities, agencies, and businesses involved in environmental science research and applications. Leading Japanese and American researchers will guest lecture in the keystone course.

    Cost Include Description:
    The Program Fee of $6650 includes tuition, books, and health insurance. A housing fee of $1320 is also assessed for the summer session. For students participating in home stays, this covers at least two meals a day and commuting costs between the home stay site and the Center. For students living in the JCMU apartments, the housing fee covers apartment rent, utilities, maintenance, and cleaning. Round-trip airfare is estimated at $1100. Students will make their own flight arrangements within the program schedule, but JCMU will assign a recommended flight that will be met at the airport by JCMU staff.
