In summer 2008, the International Summer University of the University of Tartu will offer beside language programs several social science programs, which are designed for English-speaking international students from all over the world. The International Summer University will offer courses in the areas where University of Tartu has earned special recognition in international academic circles. Dates of the social science programs of the International Summer University: July 21 to August 7, 2008. The programs are offered in the English language. Academic Programs: - Global Business from the Local (CEEC/Baltic) Perspective - European Integration and Russian Foreign Policy - Procedures in European International Courts - Building Information Society and e-Government The program is divided into three one-week sessions: I session: July 21 to July 25 - Tartu, in the premises of the University of Tartu main campus II session: July 28 to August 1 - Pärnu, in the premises of Tartu University Pärnu College III session: August 4 to August 7 - Tallinn, in the premises of Tartu University Office in Tallinn. Between the sessions there will be field-trips: the weekend between Session I and II: July 25 to July 27 - field-trip to Narva (the most eastern town of the European Union, bordering Russia); the weekend between Session II and III: August 1 to August 3 - field-trip to Saaremaa (Estonia's largest island and a popular tourist destination). Application deadline: 1 June, 2008. Fee for the optional field-trip to St.Petersburg - 795 EUR payable by 01 July 2008. The trip will be arranged in the event that at least 10 participants have registered for the event and made the payment in due time.

The session in Tartu will take place in the premises of Tartu University main campus. Tartu is a typical university town with a population of around 100,000. University of Tartu is the largest employer of the city. Established in 1632 (the same year as Harvard), University of Tartu is the largest public academic institution in Estonia and has high academic reputation in Europe and around the world. During each summer, there are a lot of different activities organized in Tartu, which gives various possibilities for the spending of the free time. Students will be accommodated in the university's academic hostel, which is within a short walking distance from the building where the lectures will take place. The session in Parnu will take place in the premises of University of Tartu Parnu College. The College was established in 1996 as University of Tartu first regional college. It combines the advantages of a large science-oriented university with the idyllic atmosphere of an old town and active summer-resort. Students will be accommodated in academic or tourist hostels, which are in the vicinity of the academic buildings. The session in Tallinn will take place in the premises of English College, which are located at the very center of the city. Tallinn is the capital city of Estonia with the population of around 400,000 and 3 million tourist visitors each year. It is one of the best retained medieval European towns, with its web of winding cobblestone streets, which developed in the 11th to 15th centuries, and is preserved nearly in its entirety. Tallinn has been inscribed on UNESCO's World Heritage List. Tallinn has attained fame and a powerful role in the Baltic Sea area through its membership in the Hansa League. Students will be accommodated in Tallinn University of Technology academic hostel, which is within a short drive from the city center and easily accessible with public transportation. In each location students have access to the academic library and computer facilities.

The fees are indicated in EUR, but can also be paid in USD according to the exchange rate of the day of payment.Program fee: 1,650 EUR. The fee covers participation in the lectures, participation in meetings and site visitations organized as part of the academic program. The fee also covers the cost of course materials which will be handed to the participant during the first course meeting. The fee also covers the accommodation in hostels during the academic program (two persons in one room); participation in the field-trips, transportation and accommodation during the two weekends; transportation from and to the student point of arrival and departure in Tallinn; transportation between the cities where the program is conducted; and other cultural events organized for all the participants of the International Summer University. The following payment dates apply: 1) non-refundable registration fee (part of the program fee) of 280 EUR payable by June 01, 2008; 2) remaining part of the program fee payment - 1370 EUR payble by July 01, 2008;
