Burlington Cuba College Study Abroad Program: Now Accepting Applications for Spring 2010
Cuba
- Other Cities in Cuba:
Havana
Term: Spring
Dates: Spring semester 2010
Description:
Burlington College is now accepting applications for a semester of study at the University of Havana at its main campus in Havana, in the Spring of 2010.
A fascinating destination in the Caribbean, Cuba has been isolated from nearly all contact with its northern neighbor since the 1950s, when the United States government restricted travel to the island nation. Visits and study in Cuba are still restricted for U.S. citizens, and we have been isolated in turn from Cubans. Now, Burlington College in Burlington, Vermont, operating under a license from the U.S. Office of Foreign Assets Control, has created an educational program in Havana, the vibrant educational, political, and cultural capital of Cuba.
Living and studying in Cuba will sharpen the students' abilities to think critically and creatively. Cuba is a nation that, against enormous odds, has gone its own way and has developed a society and culture unlike any other. For students from its powerful northern neighbor Cuba offers the singular opportunity to question, debate, and discuss, to get beneath the surface of propaganda and spin, and to evaluate for themselves the art, culture, history, and politics of this fascinating world 90 miles from our shores.
Highlights:
Three elective courses chosen from the spring catalogue of the Faculty of Arts and Letters. One option may be an introductory course in Cuban and Caribbean history, arts, and culture, given by the Ludwig Foundation in Havana, a non-governmental organization devoted to arts and culture. These electives allow students to shape their own course of study in Cuba to meet their own needs and interests. A wide variety of classes are available in history, literature, arts, and social sciences, as well as seminars in cinema and Afro-Cuban culture. Housing in Havana and most meals will be provided as part of the program arrangements in cooperation with the University of Havana. Students in the Burlington College program will live among Cubans and will experience the difficulties of life on the island as well as its joys, especially the pleasure of becoming acquainted with Cubans. The Capital city of Cuba, one of the most vital cities in the world, and a destination for many visitors to Latin America, Havana is filled with buildings, parks, and squares of Spanish and Art Nouveau design. It is the center of Cuban life, and students will live in and feel the beat of urban life in Cuba today from its oldest neighborhood in Old Havana to its newest in the Vedado section.
