Description:
Join us for St. John's own multi-city "Discover the World: Europe" program for Fall. You can choose to spend your semester in three of the following remarkable cities- Dublin, Ireland; Paris, France; Rome, Italy; and Salamanca, Spain. By taking you to three countries in a single semester, 'Discover the World' offers you a better multi-faceted perspective of European culture and politics. Through our academic offerings and service activities, you'll encounter extraordinary new opportunities to engage the people and cultures of modern Europe. Above all, you'll build a stronger academic portfolio by living and learning in three European countries in one semester. Our vibrant academics and on-site learning are the hallmarks of Discover the World: Europe. Each classes transforms your host cities' cultural and historic resources by making them key components of your learning experience. Discover the World: Europe features an innovative, modular class format that splits your 15-week semester into three, five-week sessions with one or two courses in each city. Some of your most exciting experiences will take place outside the classroom. Perfect your French as you watch films in the movies houses lining the Champs-Élyéees. Develop a Roman accent as you order gelato Italian-style ice cream at a local gelateria. That's why we typically schedule classes four days a week - so you'll have three days a week to study, travel and "discover" on your own. Discover the World: Europe represents a value to you as well; travel between your home cities is included in the program fee. In addition, you may decide to travel even farther afield on independent trips throughout the continent--and beyond. Accommodations: Specially chosen for Discover the World: Europe, your accommodations will give you comfort and access to unsurpassed intellectual and cultural resources. * Dublin: One of the U.N.'s World Heritage sites, Dublin is the capital of Ireland, whose booming economy has earned it the nickname "Celtic Tiger." With accommodations and classes at All Hallows College - 10 minutes from Dublin's thriving downtown - you'll enjoy all the benefits of living steps from your classes while enjoying the cultural attractions of a major city that feels like a small town. * Rome: Just minutes from Vatican City and other historic locations, our Rome campus, is your premier base for exploring Europe. You'll live in our newly renovated Collegio Leoniano residence facility, located in the same building as our classrooms. This building boasts great locations, spacious rooms and laundry facilities. * Paris: The Enlightenment, Impressionism, and Existentialism - many of our world's pivotal cultural movements began in Paris. Discover the World: Europe puts you in the middle of this vital metropolis. You'll stay at St. John's new facility, the Maison Mere, located just steps from the Bon Marché. The building is perfectly located in downtown Paris and offers you easy access to the wonders of the City of Lights. * Salamanca: A treasure trove of medieval and Renaissance architecture, this ancient city is the seat of the University of Salamanca - Spain's oldest university and St. John's new partner institution. You'll live in dormitory-style housing - double room occupancy near the historic university - allowing you to interact with students from across Europe and the world. In each city, we also provide students with at least two meals a day, four days a week. In addition, each accommodation is centrally located, within walking distance of your classes, shops and restaurants, public transportation and other amenities. Go global and Discover the World!
Highlights:
Students have the unique opportunity to earn 15 credits over 15 weeks in three of Europe's most beautiful cities. Service Learning: Making new friends while helping to change lives is an inspiring experience - one that sets us apart from other study abroad programs. Service Learning is a distinctive part of all programs at St. John's, reflecting our Vincentian Catholic heritage and our focus on helping students make the world a better place by serving others. You'll make a real difference through activities like teaching English to local students, serving food in soup kitchens and mentoring school children. Spending time in volunteer environments, you'll actively engage the people around you. Service activities are scheduled regularly, so you can sign up for as many as you like. "Studying in three international cities was amazing. Rome is rich with history and the classroom is literally the city. You can walk down the street and actually witness history preserved. Paris is very sophisticated and cosmopolitan. It's very beautiful and relaxed- no wonder Picasso, Chagall, Van Gogh and countless other artists were inspired by the city. And Salamanca is just as pleasing as the other two cities. It's a university city and you can witness how international college students live. A typical day includes going to the Plaza Mayor to get tapas. I definitely got used to this lifestyle." - Alex Shalan Junior, College of Professional Studies
